With around 20,000 participants expected over five days, the World Urban Forum 9, taking place in Kuala Lumpur from 7-13 February 2018 is the first major urban development conference since the adoption of the New Urban Agenda under Habitat III and the first conference dedicated to its implementation.

Daniël Termont, president of EUROCITIES and mayor of Ghent, said:

“European cities are some of the most sustainable, inclusive and competitive in the world. For us the Sustainable Development Goals should be the reference framework to drive our commitment to fight poverty, climate change and to ensure prosperity for all. We know that real change happens at the local level, and it is in our cities that targets must be met in an integrated way and with the engagement of citizens and all stakeholders.”

Anna Lisa Boni, secretary general, EUROCITIES, said:

“Cities are increasingly recognised as global changemakers in areas from climate change to social inclusion. The power of cities is reflected not only in the Sustainable Development Goals, but in the European and global urban agendas as well. With many EUROCITIES members represented at the World Urban Forum, let’s use it as an opportunity to connect the dots and translate policies into reality. Linking these initiatives would demonstrate the commitment of all levels of government to work together and provide an extra spark to achieve results that matter to people.”

Dr. Peter Kurz, mayor of Mannheim, said:

“The successful implementation of global goals can only succeed in dialogue with the cities. With our active participation in the World Urban Forum 9, we can enrich the discussion on the implementation and monitoring of the New Urban Agenda with local knowledge.”

Events to watch out for:

  • Friday, 9 February 2018, 13.30–14.30 in the Media Center: Dr. Peter Kurz, mayor of Mannheim will participate alongside EU Commissioner Corina Creţu to present the International Urban Cooperation programme. This funded programme is an important contribution of the European Union to the implementation of the New Urban Agenda.
  • Saturday 10 February, 14.00-15.00 in the Listen to Cities room: ‘Scaling the Mannheim Model of Implementing the SDGs and the New Urban Agenda on the City Level’.
